Elbow

Procedures

Distal biceps tendon ruptures are uncommon injuries that occur from a sudden, traumatic injury to the elbow. They often result from lifting heavy objects, when the elbow is forced straight while the biceps is contracting. Patients often will experience a pop in the elbow and notice a bulge in their arm from the retracted tendon.  Weakness in elbow flexion and forearm rotation is also commonly seen.

Distal triceps tendon ruptures are rare injuries that occur from a sudden, traumatic injury to the elbow. They often result from a forced bending of the elbow during a pushing or pressing movement. Patients often will experience a pop in the elbow and notice a bulge in the back of their arm from the retracted tendon. Weakness in elbow extension is commonly seen.

Loose bodies in the elbow are small pieces of bone or cartilage that can move around in the joint. These bodies can occasionally cause pain, swelling and locking of the elbow. Surgical management utilizing elbow arthroscopy to remove the loose bodies can alleviate these symptoms.

Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) tears are rare injuries seen predominantly in overhead athletes. They generally occur from chronic, repetitive overuse and can cause pain or decreased performance when throwing. Both nonoperative and operative treatment exists to allow athletes to return to throwing.
