Making the decision for surgery is not easy. For some, the idea of surgery can be unnerving. Whether you take the challenge in stride or feel nervous, knowing what to expect and simple preparation can make this less daunting. Dr. Chang’s team is dedicated to ensuring your surgical experience is a positive one.
Most of Dr. Chang’s surgeries are done on an outpatient basis, allowing you to return home the same day. As with all surgeries, please plan ahead of time to have help or assistance for at least the first few days following surgery.
To help you prepare for your upcoming surgery, please read the information below.
Well Before Your Surgery
Medical Clearance
If you are over 65 years of age or have underlying medical issues, it may be necessary to undergo an EKG and certain lab tests to obtain medical clearance from your primary care physician (PCP). Dr. Chang and his surgical team will let you know whether or not you need to contact your PCP.
Please have your PCP fax all preoperative clearances to (703) 797-6981.
Physical Therapy
Physical therapy (PT) is an essential part of your post-operative rehabilitation. During your preoperative consultation, you will receive a referral for PT, as well as a list of locations. Once you have your surgical date set, please set up your physical therapy appointments before surgery to ensure no delay in your recovery.
Dr. Chang and his surgical team will let you know when to begin physical therapy. If you are unsure when to begin physical therapy, please call Dr. Chang’s office to confirm. You may also refer below for basic guidelines on when to start PT.
• Shoulder Surgery: 2-3 weeks
• Knee Surgery: 3-5 days
• Note: Patellar Tendon or Quadriceps Tendon Repair begins at 2 weeks.
• Hip Surgery: 1 week
• Elbow Surgery: 1-2 weeks
• Note: If you are splinted postoperatively, you must see Dr. Chang first before starting PT to have the splint removed.
• Ankle Surgery: 2-3 weeks.
• Note: you must see Dr. Chang first prior to starting PT to have the splint or cast removed.
Preparing Your Home
Following orthopedic surgery, your ability to perform basic household tasks may be limited. It is recommended to prepare your household prior to surgery to make your recovery as smooth as possible. Here are some guidelines to consider.
Postoperative Support: Following surgery, you should have someone home with you for at least 1-2 days.
• Single Level Recovery: If possible, prepare a recovery space on a single floor to avoid having to use the stairs.
• Comfort: Having blankets and pillows nearby to elevate the extremities can help alleviate swelling and pain.
• Nutrition: Stock your household with items to provide a well balanced diet for 3-5 days.
• Safety: Remove area rugs (if possible) so you do not trip over them. Tape down any electrical cords that could be in the way when you walk.
• Shower Stool: Purchase a shower stool to place in your shower or bathtub.
Medical Leave
If you require documentation to provide for your employer or school, please contact Dr. Chang’s office at (703) 797-6918.
